[PESEL - personal identification number]

The PESEL number has the function of identifying individuals residing in Poland and is also a social security number. It is this number that is used by your employer to transfer all social contributions on your behalf.

ISSUANCE OF A PESEL NUMBER IN PERSON

We have already told you more than once why a foreigner in Poland needs a PESEL number, but we will remind you again.

PESEL number is an 11-digit code, which is assigned to every Polish citizen from the moment of birth, as well as to foreigners who stay in Poland for more than 1 month and have a propiska (meldunek). In some cases PESEL can be issued even without a propiska.

Here are the main transactions that require a PESEL number:

1. acquiring ownership of real estate (apartments, houses, land);
2. registration of insurance contracts;
3. formalization of official employment;
4. registering a relationship;
5. opening your own company (in this case you will also need a NIP number, which is assigned to all tax residents of Poland);
6. obtaining medical services, issuing sick leaves, maternity leave and so on;
7. submitting tax returns;
8. using many banking services: opening accounts, applying for loans and mortgages;
   sometimes your PESEL number may be asked even when shopping on the Internet.

And this is not yet a definitive list.

The registry of the Electronic Population Registration System collects all the PESEL numbers of individuals, each of which has a lot of information recorded behind it. Such as:

• Your place of residence and employment;
• marital status;
• whether you have any unpaid fines, and if so, for which offenses they were issued;
• whether you have any criminal cases pending in the courts and so on.

In other words, all information about you and your stay in Poland is stored under your PESEL number.

It is advantageous and convenient for all systems and bodies within the Polish state to have maximum information about their residents. That is why PESEL number is being required in more and more institutions, interaction with which ensures comfortable stay in Poland for every resident.

WHAT DOCUMENTS YOU NEED TO BRING WITH YOU FOR FILING

Before visiting the office, it is necessary to prepare the following documents: a foreigner's identity card: a passport with a valid visa (or a residence card), as well as a rental agreement. Then it is necessary to fill in the application form of the approved form and submit it together with the passport and the contract to the inspector.

If everything is in order, you will be issued a PESEL number within a couple of hours.

Please note that you may be refused a PESEL number if the application form is filled out with errors.

If you do not have a propiska, you have the right to issue a PESEL number without it.

You can apply for a PESEL number in person at the local municipal or commune council (Urząd Miejski) where you are registered. If you do not have a propiska, you can apply for a PESEL at the place of registration of your employer.

For citizens of the European Union and their family members, it is possible to apply for a PESEL and a propiska online via a profile on the ePUAP platform.

For foreigners who are not EU citizens or their family members, it is not yet possible to issue a PESEL online. Such foreigners can obtain their number only at the office: the municipal or commune council.
